A Good New York Music Store?

Hi everyone,

Looks like my original plan to be in New York for the summer isn't going to work out as I have been offered work back in Ireland so will be going home instead. This means I won't ever get to 'meetup'! You might be able to help me with one thing though - I will be visiting New York briefly before I go home and wonder are there any good music stores that you would recommend in the city for sheet music? I want to buy sheet music for classical piano pieces, along with vocal/conductor scores for broadway shows etc. Also I want to buy a copy of the 'Sibelius' score writer and wonder is there any store in New York where it might be more reasonably priced than somewhere like Guitar Centre?

Sorry for all the questions, I realise it they don't fully fall under the remit of the meetup group but hope you can help me anyway.

I wish we had such a group in Ireland!

Anyway, goodbye for now and keep enjoying the music,

Colm H

Hi Colm,

Here are three places in NYC you might wish to check out for sheet music:

1) Joseph Patelson Music House at 160 West 56th Street;
2) Frank Music Co. at 244-250 West 54th Street (10th Floor); and
3) Julliard Bookstore at its temporary location on West 66th Street (between Broadway and Amsterdam).

Both Patelson and Frank Music have websites.

I've also purchased frequently from Sheet Music Plus (sheetmusicplus.com). They ship worldwide and have an extensive selection.

Hope that helps!

Best,
Mary

Just a few more suggestions...

For Broadway tunes and other pop music:

* Sam Ash (48th between 6th and 7th aves)
* Colony Music (49th and Broadway)
* www.musicnotes.com (if they don't have what you're looking for, this site is worth a look)

WHICH CITY IN IRELAND ARE YOU HEADED TO?

SIBELIUS is good if you intend to write a symphony but it's expensive. MusEdit by Yowza is good enough for songs and such and costs a quarter of what you'll pay for the mighty Finn.
